Gearing Up for IT Calamities¬
Mr.Erya Houn Heng, President and CEO of First Group (Holdings) officiated this whole-day workshop and delivered the opening address. In his address, Erya said “disaster recovery is becoming more important in enterprise computing as devices, systems, and networks are becoming more complex each day with even simple things can go wrong, thus will lead to the urgency of comprehensive disaster recovery plans”. Compared to disaster recovery plan back in twenty years ago, disaster recovery plans now are becoming more complex. According to the Author of Disaster Recovery Planning, Jon William Toigo, back in 1980s, when fire threat came to the system, a disaster recovery plan were consisted of powering down the mainframe and computers before the sprinkler system came on, disassembling components, and subsequently drying circuit boards in the parking lot with a hair dryer. Nowadays, current enterprise systems could not implement the same disaster recovery plan in 1980s as current systems tend to grow larger and more complicated for such simple and hands-on approaches. Hence, the significance of more comprehensive recovery plans need to be put in place. Erya Houn Heng further added, “it is obvious that we need to be alert and prepared, even before any potential risks or disaster strike. However, most of companies in the world are still lack of preparation for disaster recovery plan.” According to Disaster Recovery website, "despite the presence of public awareness on the importance of disaster recovery plan since 9/11 catastrophe, only about 50 percent of companies were reported to have a disaster recovery plan. Nevertheless, half of the said companies never tested their plan, which are tantamount to not having one at all. As a consequence, it can lead to the interruption of service or loss of data, thus may lead to serious financial impact and loss of customer confidence.”Having realized the importance of BCM to be implemented in the companies, First Cambodia together with HeiTech Padu Berhad (Malaysia ), Emerson Network Power and Hitachi, are responsibly hosted a BCM workshop to educate the participants on the urgency to understand and implement strategic platforms on business resilience and continuity amidst global uncertainties.
